Glenelg River   Print

Photo Bob McPhersonThis Estuary river is more than 80 kilometers long and on a salt wedge during winter with the rain. This river system is one of the areas true jewels in amongst its wild wilderness and is still similar to as it was hundreds of years ago. The state forest and National Parks of the upper Glenelg, to Casterton and to Lower Nelson where it spasmodically flows into the sea. The mighty mulloway swim in this river system and in the early days were caught weighing in excess of 40kg. This River is alive with yellow eye Mullet to the Blue lip big black bream that have reached in excess of 3kg but average over 1kg.
The Bass is a true challenge for the serious of Fishermen.

A lot of the Mulloway are caught in this system weigh over 6kg. Upstream this river is alive with spectacular views of the limestone cliffs, natural forest, flora & fauna to blow most peoples eyes out. Hikers and backpackers from all over the world stay at Nelson with the challenge of canoeing and camping. Camping site fees and canoes for hire make any campers stay an enjoyable one. A lot of this river system is over 30 meters wide. The managers of these parks take great care in making the parks look like they did hundreds of years ago and the facilities are squeaky clean with toilets, water, camping sites, boat ramps and all blended into the environment. This area has a lot of settlement history attached to it.
Nelson hotel is a place to pick up some of this history and the photos tell a story. Many shacks cover the lower end, near nelson and a lot of these so called shacks are as good as a house to some. At Nelson there is: river boat River tours, hire boats, canoes and of course the hotel and accommodation. These National Parks are maintained by the owners as though they were there own back yards and are kept meticulously clean and natural looking.
The national Parks really look how nature truly intended them to be viewed and this environment is Pristine .The famous south west walk goes right through the heart of the best visual mecca with some unique flora & fauna to be viewed.
Orchids and wild Flowers, aura Kingfisher, Midnight Erons and endangered red tail cockatoos nest in this area. And the list just goes on!!!
